Receipt Scanning Reward Apps: An Honest Guide

How receipt apps like Fetch work, what they're realistically worth, and the privacy trade-off.

Receipt scanning apps give you points for photographing receipts you already have. They're easy, but the value is small, usually a few dollars in gift cards over months. Here's how to get the most out of them without overthinking it.

1. Know how they make money

Brands and market researchers pay for purchase data and promotions. Your receipts are the product, in exchange for points.

2. Expect small rewards

Typical users earn a few dollars to perhaps $10–20 in gift cards over several months, more if you buy featured brands.

3. Scan every receipt

Groceries, gas, restaurants and online orders often all count, and small amounts add up.

4. Check featured brands, but don't buy for points

Bonus points on featured brands are only worth it for things you'd buy anyway.

5. Scan promptly

Most apps only accept receipts from the last couple of weeks.

6. Mind the privacy trade-off

You're sharing what, where and when you buy. Read the privacy policy and decide whether it's worth it.

7. Be careful linking email

Some apps offer to scan your email for e-receipts. That gives them access to your inbox, so only connect it if you're comfortable.

8. Redeem regularly

Cash out when you hit a gift card threshold so points don't sit unused.

9. Don't stack too many apps

One or two apps is plenty; more just adds time for little extra value.

How the unlock works: to get the bonus you'll be asked to try one sponsored app or offer from our partner. It's optional, the guide above is complete without it, and the sponsor pays us when you complete their offer. Only do it if the app genuinely interests you.
